On Saturday 13th March 10.15am a group of members visited the World Museum Liverpool. Dr Ashley Cooke, Curator of Egyptian and Near Eastern Antiquities, gave an illustrated talk on some of the highlights of the Egyptian collection. This was followed by a "handling session"of carefully selected objects with their associated excavation reports to hand. On Saturday 15th May 24 members and guests joined a coach trip to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. We departed from Bebington at 8 am arriving in Oxford in time for lunch. We had over 5 hours to explore both the museum's varied collections and the city, the glorious weather giving the trip a holiday feel. The last visit of this year for members and guests will be to The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, The University, Edgbaston, Birmingham, in the morning and the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, in the City Centre, in the afternoon. At the Barber Institute there is a special exhibition, The Sacred and Profane, which is the Myers Collection of Egyptian Art from Eton College. It is a wide selection of small items including mummy masks, jewellery, papyri and children's toys tracing two and a half millennia of life and death. In the afternoon we will be able to see the recently re-displayed Ancient Egypt galleries at the museum. The collection relates to the period between 5000 BC and 30 BC. On show there is material excavated at Saqqara, including items from the animal cemetery, Buhen, Qasr Ibrim, Abydos and Esna. The coach will leave Bebington Civic Centre Car Park at 8 am, arriving at the Barber Institute at 10 am. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available on arrival but must be paid for in advance, £1.95 each. The coach will then leave at 12 noon for the afternoon program. The Edwardian Tea Room at the museum has both self-service snacks and full meals and will reserve tables for us. We plan to return to Bebington by 7 pm and the departure time from Birmingham will be decided on the day. The cost of the coach is £15.00 each. If you need more information or wish to reserve seats on the coach, please email our secretary, secretary@waes.org.uk, or use the contact form.
